Greenpeace: Activists block Fonterra coal

Greenpeace NZ

Dear Friend

Our activists are highlighting another Fonterra climate crime and this time they've delivered the solution to the doorstep of one its Canterbury factories.

While they've stopped coal arriving at the fuel depot of Fonterra's Clandeboye factory in Canterbury this morning they've made their own delivery and have dumped three tonnes of wood pellets in its coal depot.

We are calling on Fonterra, the country's third largest coal user and one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases, to switch to a cleaner fuel source, like the one we've delivered, without delay.

Wood pellets and other biomass products of the timber industry are viable alternatives to coal which burn cleaner, release less carbon dioxide and are renewable.

The choice between using polluting coal or a cleaner solution like wood pellets goes to the core of the challenge facing New Zealand at a time when the world needs to be responding to the climate crisis.

We say that ignoring the climate crisis and mining coal, from areas including conservation land and National Parks, to burn in Fonterra factories producing low value milk powder for the commodities market, is nothing short of criminal.

New Zealanders made a very clear statement recently when over 40,000 people marched down Queen St, in the biggest protest seen in a generation.  We don't want our environment and our reputation compromised by short term thinking.  It's time for our Government, and Fonterra, to listen.

The future of the world's whales will be decided in June by the International Whaling Commission (IWC). It will be considering a proposal, supported by the NZ Government, which could legitimise commercial whaling and allow hunting to continue in the Southern Ocean.
